Pre-Move Preparations:
Make a list of all the services you need or may need from you mover including: items to be moved, packing materials needed, items to be packed and unpacked by the movers, items to be dismantled and reassembled by the movers, and special services such as handling a piano, antiques, light fixtures, appliances, crating service, etc.
Inquire about all requirements and restrictions at both the pick-up and delivery locations, such as building protection, days and hours in which access is not permitted, parking restrictions, etc. Contact the building management or super, when applicable. Some building managements require moving companies to show a "Certificate of Insurance." These certificates protect the building against liability for damage. Make sure that your moving company knows all the restrictions and can meet all the requirements.
Decide the way by which you may want to move your vehicle/s ‚ by driving or via a moving company.
Get an estimate from 3-5 moving companies. If your move is large, inquire about free on-site estimates and ask for it in writing. Make sure that all services requested are included in the proposal. Inquire about the way in which you can insure the move. Ask whether the pick-up and delivery dates (or time-frame for delivery) are guaranteed.
When you choose a moving company, take into consideration not only the price, but also the services included in the price, as well as the movers' reputation.
Reserve a moving day with your moving company. Make sure that pick-up and delivery dates (or time frame for delivery) are guaranteed. If you are uncertain about the exact moving date, ask your moving representative to reserve a tentative date and explain that it might be changed.
Make arrangements for transporting pets and plants.
Call your moving company for confirmation a few days before the move.
On Moving Day:
Each move is supervised directly by a Foreman. The Foreman is in charge of the other movers and is responsible for fulfilling the moving agreement in a professional and smooth manner. Refer to the Foreman with all remarks, questions and last minutes requests.
Be sure to receive copies of the "Order for Service" and the "Bill of Lading," before the move is started.
Offer the movers something to drink. Do not offer alcohol.
Make sure the movers have directions to their destination.
While unloading, tell the movers the new location of every item. Many customers prepare a "Floor Plan," prior to the move. If you have one, give a copy to the movers. Placing all furniture and boxes in their new location, will save you valuable time and make your moving-in process smoother.
After the Move:
Start unpacking and get adjusted to your new home. There is still a lot do, such as finding out about local medical and health services, libraries, classes, as well as getting involved socially and with your community. We wish you good luck!
