Tips on moving a refrigerator
When it is time to move to a new place, you want to bring your appliances.
Here are a few tips for preparing your refrigerator for transport.
- Empty out the fridge. That of course means food, any shelving, trays, and any remaining movable parts.
- Unplug the fridge from the outlet.
- Defrost and dry excess water with towels.
- If there is an ice maker, disconnect it.
- Tie the doors shut with rope or bungee cords.
- While moving the refrigerator, keep it upright. Don’t move it on its back or sides. If using a hand truck to move it, carry it from the side of the fridge.
- Never store the refrigerator on its side. The compressor oil could run into the cooling tubes.
- If you can’t transport a fridge completely upright, at least angle it so that the top end is higher than the bottom.
- When placing it inside the moving truck secure it against the side wall with straps or rope. You want it to move as little as possible.
- When you move it into your new place leave it unplugged in its news location for a few hours. This gives the compressor oil time to settle back down.
- Plug it back in and wait for it to reach its ideal temperature. It might take a couple days for it to do this.
