Tips on moving a refrigerator
When it is time to move to a new place, you want to bring your appliances.
Here are a few tips for preparing your refrigerator for transport.
- Empty out the fridge. That of course means food, any shelving, trays, and any remaining movable parts.
- Unplug the fridge from the outlet.
- Defrost and dry excess water with towels.
- If there is an ice maker, disconnect it.
- Tie the doors shut with rope or bungee cords.
- While moving the refrigerator, keep it upright. Don’t move it on its back or sides. If using a hand truck to move it, carry it from the side of the fridge.
- Never store the refrigerator on its side. The compressor oil could run into the cooling tubes.
- If you can’t transport a fridge completely upright, at least angle it so that the top end is higher than the bottom.
- When placing it inside the moving truck secure it against the side wall with straps or rope. You want it to move as little as possible.
- When you move it into your new place leave it unplugged in its news location for a few hours. This gives the compressor oil time to settle back down.
- Plug it back in and wait for it to reach its ideal temperature. It might take a couple days for it to do this.

Moving firearms across the country.
Each state has it’s own rules and regulations regarding the possession of firearms. If you are moving to a new state, then it is apart of your job to find out the state and local laws of your new area. This also means looking up the rules for transporting weapons across state lines. Here are some general rules for moving your guns to your new home. As I said, this is a general list. This is by no means legal advice and you should look up all state and federal laws regarding the legal packing and moving of your firearms.
Some points to consider:
- Can you legally possess your firearm in your new area? If not, you have to decide what to do with. Either sell it, or give it to a friend or family member for safe keeping.
- Each state may have different laws on transporting your guns by car. Your best bet would be to look up the rules for each state that you would be driving through. In most cases you are fine as long as your gun is unloaded and properly packed away.
- And concealed carry permits you hold may not be valid in a different state. So find out beforehand.
- Another option would be to send your guns through a gun dealer. For a fee, they would ship your guns to a gun shop near to your new area. This would be a good way to help get your firearms registered in your new state.

Tips for hiring painters.
Whether you want your new place to be painted before you move in, or you want to get your old place painted before you sell it, unless you’re doing it yourself you will have to deal with painters and painting companies.
Some details to consider:
- How long will the job take? When will they be able to start and how long do they estimate the job taking to complete. What kinds of prep work will they do?
- Are they licensed?
- Get your price quotes and completion time estimates upfront and in writing. Don’t let them start the project, until they give you a definite price and time frame.
- Get price quotes from different companies. Don’t always go for the cheapest quote. Remember that you usually get what you pay for.
- Ask them for referrals from past clients.
- Check out their reputation with the Better Business Bureau.
- Find out if the company has its own painters, or if it will be contracted out to other companies.
- How experienced is the painting staff?
- How long has the company been in business?
- Is the company or contractor insured? And if so, what does their insurance cover?
- Listen to their advice on a project, but still let them know what you want.

Moving your car to a new house.
Sometimes you have more cars than you do drivers. You might be moving somewhere across your country or across continents. If that is the case, you won’t be able to drive your car to your new place. So you might have to use a car moving company.
Whatever your case may be, here are some tips to help you out:
- Do lots of research on available car moving companies in or near your area. Find out how far they will travel. Ask about their packing and transport methods.
- See what kinds of insurance they have and what types of damage to your vehicle it covers.
- Talk to your insurance company to see what kind of coverage it offers in the event of some unforeseen accident while your car is being transported.
- Be sure to take all of your stuff out of your car. The moving company will probably not take any responsibility for items lost in transit.
- Get a lot of price quotes. Then go through them and see what those prices cover. The cheapest offer isn’t always the best offer.
- Document any defects in your car before the moving company takes possession. This will help you later, if your car suffers any dings and minor damage. Everything will be on paper, so the company can’t claim it was already there.
- If you are moving locally, look into renting a trailer to drag your car behind. Or get a friend or family member to drive your extra car to your new place.

The biggest items you will have to move is your furniture. After you’ve decide which furniture is moving with you, the packing process can begin.
- If your furniture can be disassembled, take it apart and pack it securely. Keep all of the nuts, bolts, and other hardware together in a clearly marked bag or small box. If the pieces of the furniture are small enough pack them in boxes, otherwise just wrap it all up bubble wrap.
- If it doesn’t fully come apart, take it apart as far as you can. It will make storage easier and give you more packing space.
- If you don’t have instructions on how something was put together, make yourself some while taking it apart. Just in case you forget how something goes back together. Moving can be a high stress situation, so it would be understandable that you forget things you did during the process. This is why making yourself checklists are also an ideal practice.
- For your couches, take all of the cushions and package them in bags for protection.
- With dressers and cabinets, be sure and empty all of the content inside them.
- When loading your furniture on the moving truck, cover it with sheets. Surround it with moving pads to help protect you items from damage. You don’t want to hurt yourself or the furniture, so always use the proper tools to move your items. Don’t try and move big items yourself, get a few buddies or neighbors to help you out. Or if you’re hiring a moving company, let them do it.

Here are some reasons why you might want to get a storage unit:
- If you have a lot of clutter around your house and are not willing to get rid of it.
- You are in the middle of a move and want a temporary place to put stuff.
- You are moving to a smaller place than your previous home and just don’t have the space for all your stuff.
Here are some things to consider when researching a storage unit company:
- Find out the shapes and sizes of the units they have available.
- Are there climate controlled units?
- Does the lot have a Security System? If so, what kind?
- Are the units rented, leased, or your choice?
- What is the cost of the unit?
- Are there security guards on the premises?
- Find out the rules on the kinds of items you can store.
- How far in advance do you need to rent a unit?
- When can you visit your storage unit?
- Is there any mobile unit service?
- How many people can have access to your storage unit?
After you have your storage unit:
- Pack everything in boxes as if you were moving.
- Cover furniture with sheets.
- Electronics should be stored with the boxes and packing they came with. If you no longer have the original packaging, use a sturdy box and make sure your devices are properly padded.
- Do not store anything that will be a potential fire hazard.

In the event of a move, you will have to have your current utilities shut off and schedule for the utilities of your new place to be turned on. It is always best to schedule these times with your utility companies in advance. A few weeks before you actually move, call to set up your end dates. To prepare for the call, have all of your account numbers ready.
Find out if your current companies service the same area you are relocating to. If they do you can usually just forward your service to the new address. If not, set up the cancellation date and time for the service to be turned off. Make sure and give the company your forwarding address incase there are any issues or if they you any deposit refunds.
Call your new companies and set up a start service date and time. You generally want to schedule this the day of or before your move. By utilities, I mean Gas, Water, Electricity, and Telephone Service. Some people include cable in this list too. If you have them start the service early, you will have time to get any issues resolved before actually moving in. If you wait, you might have to live without that service while the problem gets resolved.

The main issue you will have from moving from a house to an apartment is trimming down all of the stuff you have. More than likely, you will not be able to bring it all with you.
To start your move you will need to assess the situation:
- How many rooms are in the apartment?
- What kind of space will you have?
- As with any move, this is the time to get rid of your excess belongings. Sort through everything to determine what you need, what you want, what you don’t want, and what is going in the garbage.
- Try to sell off all of the stuff you don’t want that is sellable. Furniture, yard tools, that lawn mower you won’t need anymore.
- Have a Yard Sale.
- Donate what you can’t sell to charity or give it to friends, family, and neighbors.
- Keep the furniture that you can use and that will fit in the apartment.
- You will have to make use of every inch of storage space in your new apartment. Learn to stack your items in the closet or wherever you can. Hang up everything you can.
- If you absolutely cannot get rid of your extra stuff, you will have to get a storage unit. Or some nice friends and family members with extra storage space.

If you are moving to a new house, you may want to do some small upgrades before fully moving in. This of course depends on you and whether or not the fixes are mandatory safety concerns or just cosmetic touch ups. If you are moving to a brand new house, everything should be new and up to code. If you are moving to a house that is new to you, there may be some stuff to fix or upgrade..
Not having any furniture in the house gives you the opportunity to paint the house. Maybe the walls are a little faded, or you just want a new color. A fresh coat of paint always looks better than faded paint on dirty walls. Start your new life with some new paint.
Now that the painting is done, you can focus on the floors. If the hardwood floor is old and damaged, you probably want to get that fixed or replaced. If you want to get the carpet cleaned or get new carpeting, doing it while you have little to no furniture in the house is your best time to do so.
As with moving to any new place, it is probably a good idea to get your locks replaced or re-keyed. You don’t know how many people have keys to the place. This is just a good practice for your own safety and well-being.
This is the time for minor construction projects. If you need to install any fixtures, get the house rewired; add shelving, and other such stuff. Do these things now while you have nothing to move around.

I wanted to find some advice on moving a piano, either on my own or with a couple of other guys. But from what I have read, moving a piano on your own isn’t advisable, unless you are just moving it around your house. Even in that case, hiring professional piano movers is suggested. If you don’t know what you are doing, you can easily damage a piano or knock it out of tune by improperly moving. A piano is a heavy, yet delicate instrument that must not be handled recklessly. There are many other potential accidents that could occur to you and your buddies while moving a piano.
If you are moving to a new residence, you are advised to hire professional piano movers.
This company will specialize in piano moving, so they will know all of the proper ways to dismantle (if needed), package, store, and transport a piano to your new home.
As when hiring any moving company, do your research on the company.
- Find out what their insurance policy covers damage to the piano.
- Ask about the vehicles they use..
- Their storage and packing methods.
- Ask about any dismantling they may want to do in order to move the piano.
- Check with multiple companies and get estimates.
- Find out about their traveling distances. Across town, across the state, or across the country.
