Moving firearms across the country.
Each state has it’s own rules and regulations regarding the possession of firearms. If you are moving to a new state, then it is apart of your job to find out the state and local laws of your new area. This also means looking up the rules for transporting weapons across state lines. Here are some general rules for moving your guns to your new home. As I said, this is a general list. This is by no means legal advice and you should look up all state and federal laws regarding the legal packing and moving of your firearms.
Some points to consider:
- Can you legally possess your firearm in your new area? If not, you have to decide what to do with. Either sell it, or give it to a friend or family member for safe keeping.
- Each state may have different laws on transporting your guns by car. Your best bet would be to look up the rules for each state that you would be driving through. In most cases you are fine as long as your gun is unloaded and properly packed away.
- And concealed carry permits you hold may not be valid in a different state. So find out beforehand.
- Another option would be to send your guns through a gun dealer. For a fee, they would ship your guns to a gun shop near to your new area. This would be a good way to help get your firearms registered in your new state.
